Our Bold Goal

Kristen Cincotta

Here at Komen Atlanta, we believe that many hands make light work. And right now, with more than 40,000 people still dying of breast cancer every year (including one person in metro Atlanta EVERY DAY), we have a lot of work to do.

Back in September, Susan G. Komen announced a new Bold Goal: to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% by 2026. The Komen Scientific Advisory Board, together with our team of Komen Scholars and breast cancer experts from around the world came together to not only set this goal for our organization, but to develop a plan of action to help us get there. This goal, and the plan to achieve it, is exhilarating, a little bit intimidating, and yes, BOLD. It will require hard work from all of us but we firmly believe that we will achieve it.

Here at Komen Atlanta, though, we’re not ones to leave good enough alone. We wanted to challenge ourselves to do even more. So we set a Bold Goal for ourselves and for our city: to lower the breast cancer mortality rate for African American women in metro Atlanta by 25% in the next 5 years. The increased rate at which African American women are dying of breast cancer compared to Caucasian women is both an unacceptable contributor to the overall breast cancer mortality rate and something that we know we can change. Our Executive Director, Cati Diamond Stone, wrote a great piece about how Komen Atlanta is working to achieve our goal in this post, which we encourage you to read.

These Bold Goals, and the strategic plans by which we will achieve them, are a promising start. However, we cannot accomplish these goals on our own. Without the money raised by supporters like you, these plans will remain exactly that: plans. In order to turn our plans into action, we need everyone to become More Than Pink. As Mother’s Day weekend draws near, and with it our annual Race for the Cure fundraising event, we are in high fundraising mode around the Komen Atlanta offices. This year, we’re asking all of you to go that extra mile with us. Recruit a new teammate (or five!) for your team. Set a personal goal to make our Pink Honor Roll as a Top 100 fundraiser for the first time. And if you’ve never fundraised for us before, make this the year you boldly get off the bench. Raising just $25 will earn you a chance to win a one-week stay in a Florida Keys condo AND 75,000 American Airlines AAdvantage Miles to help pay for your airfare. But more than that, you will truly be making a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

From science labs across the country to our own neighborhoods and communities here in Atlanta, we have a lot of work to do. Help us lighten our load and reach our Bold Goals by registering for the Race for the Cure on May 13th, 2017, reaching higher fundraising goals than ever before, and becoming More Than Pink.
